The Hungarian Ethnographical Encyclopedia defines üsztürü as ‘a forked pole or stick used for drying hay and grain. In the field it is stuck in the ground and hay or grain that needs to be dried is put up on and around it’. At the beginning of the 21st century of course some rewording may be necessary, since for many, the word now refers to a folk band. Üsztürü is a Transylvanian folk ensemble that was formed in the spring of 1992. They have stated their goal as: to look for and in practice also to live to [play] every feature of the swishing of horse hair on strings in the special character of the communities of each region”…
