Chalga

Chalga is a kind of Thököly-Kurukian, Turkish-friendly music - such music might have been played in the camp on a drunken night after a successful siege, and it sounds like there were a few jazz records in the spoils of war. The band does not have a folk music tradition, but makes uninhibited use of Balkan and Hungarian folk music. It could all be danceable pop music, but unfortunately the band has a particular love of broken rhythms that only the initiated know how to dance to. After two albums (Sabir, 2006; Erdő, erdő, 2010) and a couple of years break, the band was reactivated in 2018: significantly transformed, they play much more raucous and less folk music. Their 2022 album, Daher van az, reached number 21 on the World Music Charts Europe music chart.
