Magos: Bartók 1914 album launch concert and dance house

Bartók Béla's journey through Maros-Torda County in April 1914 was his last major folk music collection trip in Transylvania before the outbreak of World War I. The global conflict that began just a few months later, along with subsequent historical events, permanently swept away the state of peasant music preserved in the recordings made during this trip. The *Bartók 1914* album and concert pay tribute to this musical heritage through the interpretations of the Magos Ensemble, with pianist Fülöp Várallyay also performing at the concert.

The route Bartók traveled in the spring of 1914 drew extensively from both Hungarian and Romanian traditions. Starting in Romanian-populated areas of the Upper Maros region, the journey moved through the linguistic and ethnic borderlands of the Marosszék and Upper Maros areas, eventually leading to the Hungarian-populated Nyárád region. This allowed Bartók to document a wealth of material from areas with homogeneously Hungarian or Romanian populations, as well as from villages in the cultural contact zones between the two communities.

The material collected during the 1914 Maros-Torda County trip is reflected in several of Bartók's works, some of which will be performed at this concert. Additionally, the text of *Cantata Profana* will be presented in Bartók's own voice, guiding the audience, stanza by stanza, through the musical treasures of this pivotal journey.
