Fonó Wednesday: Dances from Magyarszentbenedek
Our Fonó Wednesday dance sessions welcome both beginner and advanced dancers who would like to deepen their knowledge of the dances of a specific region in a course-based format. Dance instructions with live music runs simultaneously for beginner and advanced groups in two rooms, followed by a shared singing session, a group dance. Everyone is welcome, with or without a partner.
During January and February dance traditions of the Magyarszentbenedek region are in the focus. Magyarszentbenedek is located in the Maros-Küküllő area and, in terms of folk music classification, belongs to the Hegymegett (Kutasföld) subregion. The character of the area is closely related to Mezőség, which is why some researchers in earlier phases of fieldwork classified it as part of that. However, from both a folk music and folk dance perspective, this categorization is not accurate. The subregion known as Kutasföld is referred to locally as Felföld or Hegymegett when viewed from the direction of the Little Küküllő, as its settlements lie beyond the watershed, and the local streams flow not into the Little Küküllő but into the Maros River. In our previous courses, we touched on material from Magyarbükkös, a Hungarian-inhabited village in the Malozsa valley; by contrast, Magyarszentbenedek is located in the Szárazvám valley.
