Szászcsávási Banda Concert and Dance House
The beautiful one-kilometer-long village of Szászcsávás, located along the Little Târnava River, is known for its excellent wine and for its unique style of polyphonic singing, considered unparalleled within Hungarian-speaking regions. Although this tradition dates back to the 19th century, its deep roots and transmission from father to son have made it an important and fascinating part of Hungarian folk heritage. What made Szászcsávás famous around the world, from America to Japan, however, is its string band: the Szászcsávási Banda. Today, the ensemble is made up of later generations from the great musical families of the village, performing in various formations.
One of the most beloved viola players discovered through the dance house movement, Ferenc Mezei “Csángálló,” passed on his exceptional musical knowledge and talent to his daughter, Tinguca Mezei. Together with her children, Bálint Mezei and Melodi Mezei, as well as her husband, Calin Mezei, they form their own ensemble. In their world, music and dance become one, as each of them is both an outstanding musician and dancer.
