Tindia Dance House – Guest: Szélműves

Starting in September, a new regular dance house series is launching at Fonó: Tindia Dance House, welcoming audiences each month with special guests and new musical encounters.

With these events, we aim to create occasions where the dance house comes alive as an ever-evolving communal space, where, alongside the traditional dance house atmosphere, innovative formations from the world of music also take the stage.

Tindia began its journey in 2015, playing Moldavian dance houses and folk pubs at a popular Budapest café. Over the more than ten years since then, the band has evolved considerably while preserving the untamed dance house energy that has defined them from the very beginning.

Rooted on the borderlands of folk and world music, their sound is distinguished by an intensely present feminine energy, freely expressed humor and instinctive musicianship. Their lineup is also a rarity in the Hungarian folk music scene: five women and one man make up the band, giving their music a unique sensitivity and dynamic. They draw primarily on Moldavian folk music, reshaping it through their own sound and arrangements, the essence of which can be heard on their two full-length albums and in the songs they have released since.

The special power of Moldavian dances lies in the communal experience. No previous dance experience is necessary: the simple, repetitive steps are easy to pick up, while the music and the community moving together in a circle almost instinctively carry you along. There is no lead dancer in the circle, everyone is an equal part of what comes to life that evening.

Szélműves

Szélműves are one of the most exciting Hungarian representatives of the brass-driven Balkan spirit. At the heart of their music is Moldavian Csángó folk music, seasoned with Romanian, Roma and Jewish melodies from Southeastern Europe, as well as their own ideas. Life-affirming, driving rhythms, crisp tuba accompaniment and sweeping brass lines create a swirling musical kaleidoscope, dressed up with accordion and koboz and crowned by multi-part female vocals. An ancient relevance paired with a modern sound that respects its musical roots, equally at home under your feet and in your ears, regardless of age.
