Handsome White Shepherd

Gyula Ács was invited to compose music for folk instruments for the Reményi Ede Chamber Orchestra of Miskolc, Hungary. He did a series of “Zsok” [or Joc] for the tarogato (Tracks 4-10); and a concerto for two Hungarian bagpipes (Tracks 1-3).
Fonó now releases these works on record along with three arrangements of folk songs (Tracks 11-13). One of the arranged folk songs provided the title for this recording - is “Miorița” the Moldavian Csángó ballad about a mountain shepherd that was killed (Track 13).

“The bagpipe concerto idea has interested me since the 1980s, ever since I learned to play the bagpipe. Playing together with my friend Ferenc Tobak, I felt like the instrument had more to offer than three jumping dances and two csárdás-es.
Zsók [or Joc] is based on the music tradition of the village of Elek - a community in Eastern Hungary that has a majority Romanian population…” Gyula Ács
